Want to be part of something that actually changes lives? At Northorpe Hall, we see every day how powerful it is when a young person has someone in their corner.
Over the last year alone, our mentoring programme has supported hundreds of children and young people across Kirklees — helping them to build confidence, feel safer in themselves, and take real steps forward in their lives.
And now we’re looking for more people to join us.

On Wednesday 24th June from 5pm, we’re hosting a Volunteer Event, so if you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to be a mentor, this is your chance to find out.
The young people we work with often arrive feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck. Some are struggling at school. Some are isolated. Some have lost confidence in themselves completely.
But through consistent, one-to-one mentoring support, change starts to happen.
In the last year, we’ve seen young people:
Re-engage with education and start to see school in a more positive way
Build practical coping strategies for anxiety and overwhelm
Improve attendance, behaviour, and relationships at school
Develop confidence to try new experiences and take positive risks
Gain independence in everyday life
One young person began mentoring believing school was “mostly negative.” Through structured support and reflective activities, they were able to see that more than half of their lessons were actually going well — a shift that helped change how they approached learning and behaviour.
Another young person, supported through anxiety and low confidence, gradually built up the courage to attend community spaces again, access support services independently, and take major steps towards independence.
These are not overnight changes — they come from trust, consistency, and someone showing up, week after week.
Why volunteer mentoring matters
Our volunteers are at the heart of this work.
They bring something that cannot be replicated elsewhere: time, patience, and the decision to show up because they want to — not because they have to.
That simple fact makes a huge difference to young people who may have experienced rejection, instability, or low trust in adults around them.
Across our mentoring service last year, young people, parents, and schools consistently told us the same thing:
“They feel more confident”
“They are more willing to try”
“They seem like a different young person”
But just as importantly, our volunteers tell us they gain confidence, communication skills, and a deep sense of purpose from the role.
