As the new year begins, many of us think about resolutions – but what if you could turn your good intentions into something truly life-changing? We're encouraging local people to do just that by volunteering and supporting young people across Kirklees.

Volunteers are at the heart of organisations like Northorpe, yet in the UK only one in three adults volunteer regularly. With demand for support higher than ever, we're hoping to help more people take the first step towards making a real difference.
“Our volunteers don’t just help, they shape futures,” says Dawn Kershaw, Volunteer Coordinator at Northorpe Hall. “By building confidence and offering consistent support, they help young people see what’s possible for their future. Even a few hours of your time can make a lasting difference – not just for the young person, but for you too.”
One of our key volunteering opportunities is the mentoring programme, which supports young people aged 10–19. Unlike short-term interventions, mentoring relationships can last several months, giving volunteers the time to build trust, understand each young person’s unique challenges, and help them navigate life’s ups and downs.
Our volunteers gain leadership skills, personal growth, and a renewed sense of purpose. Meanwhile, our young people benefit from increased confidence, improved social skills, and a stronger belief in their potential.
To inspire more people to get involved, we're hosting a Volunteer Drive on Tuesday 27th January 2026 at The Northorpe Barn, 53 Northorpe Lane, Mirfield, WF14 0QL.
There will be two events to try and allow as many people to attend as possible: 1pm and 6pm.
You'll be able to hear:
Case studies from young people who have benefited from mentoring.
Stories and insights from current volunteers.
Details about the application process.
And have the chance to ask any questions you may have.
There are also opportunities to support our work in other ways, and we'll be discussing those on the day. Additional options could include site support, office help, content for marketing, and even future trustee roles. No prior experience is required – just a willingness to invest time and help transform young lives!
